WEEK 1
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

QB - Eric Ward, Jr. Richmond
The Richmond signal caller really seems like he is ready to take the next step this season. He guided the Spiders all the way to
the Football Championship semifinals with the help of two current NFL rookies in RB Tim Hightower and WR Armand Shields.
But this week, Ward put his stamp on Richmond’s offense. Ward threw for a career high 236 yards and two scores in a road
win over 15th ranked Elon. The junior quarterback had an efficient afternoon completing 17-of-22 passes with no interceptions.
Ward connected on an 80 yard touchdown pass to Kevin Grayson on his first pass of the game and also ran the ball 14 times
for 59 yards.
RB - Bobby McClintock, Jr. Portland State
Bobby McClintock didn’t exactly have the most productive day yards wise for the Vikings, but we have to give credit where
credit is due and lets give some love to the fullback for providing a powerful offensive punch. The junior fullback returned from
a 2007 knee injury in impressive fashion, finding the end zone 4 times on the ground. McClintock also provided 116 total yards
in Portland State’s 31-14 win over Division II foe Western Oregon.
WR - Kole Heckendorf, Sr. North Dakota State
North Dakota State is now eligible for a post season birth and boy did it look like they are ready to get their in a week 1 win.
Senior wide out Kole Heckendorf caught eight passes for a career-high 179 yards and 3 scores in a 41-6 win over Austin Peay.
Heckendorf was impressive all game, connecting on a 69-yard catch on the first play from scrimmage in the 2nd half. The eight
catches also matched a career-high for the senior wide receiver.
TE - Marquez Branson, Central Arkansas
This week’s tight end of the week didn’t do anything flashy, but did everything right which might be exactly what a team is
looking for out of an FCS tight end. Central Arkansas’ Marquez Branson caught a team-high 5 passes for ninety-two yards in
the Bears’ 38-14 win over Henderson State.
OL - Stony Brook
Although the Seawolves didn’t play a conference opponent, the Stony Brook offensive line helped start their Big South era in
style. As a unit, they opened up huge holes allowing not 1, but 2 running backs to gain over 100 yards on the ground in Stony
Brook’s 42-26 win over Colgate. The Seawolves start 4 upperclassmen on a line lead by senior left tackle Lawrence Lovell. Not
only did they lead the way for 270 yards on the ground, but they also eased the first start of quarterback freshmen quarterback
Dayne Hoffman. Hoffman threw for 174 yards and a touchdown in the win.
DL - James Chen, So. Cal Poly
In a team defensive effort that pushed Cal Poly to it's second win over San Diego St. in 3 years it was Chen's presence on the
field that made it special.   Chen suffered a season-ending knee injury in last year's opener and made this one count- finishing
with a sack, a tackle assist on a safety, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
LB - Patrick Weldon, R-So.  Richmond
Weldon led the UR defense with 8 tackles, a 4th quarter interception and forced fumble limiting what expects to be an explosive
2008 Elon attack to just 10 points and an immediate statement win for new Head Coach Mike London.
DB - (Co-Winners) - Eddie Calvin, Jr. Southeast Missouri St.
SEMO needed everything Calvin gave them to avoid a bad loss to Southwest Baptist this week.  The second-year starter at CB
was around the ball all night, intercepting a career-high 3 passes (all in the first half) that kept the Redhawks in the game that
they'd eventually pull out in overtime.  Calvin totalled 71 return yards and also chipped in 7 tackles and a pass break-up.
Anthony Walters, So. Delaware
The 2nd year starter backed up the hype surrounding his raw ability, making a team-high and career-best 13 tackles from his
cornerback position.  The Philadelphia, Pa., native garnered an interception during the third quarter as the Terrapins were
assembling a then-49 yard drive deep into Delaware territory.  Walters and the Blue Hen defense held Maryland’s offense to
just 14 points.
ST - Terrence Holt, So. Kick Returner, Austin Peay Governors
Holt was a very big bright spot on an otherwise forgetful night at the Fargodome last Thursday in a 41-6 loss to #2 North
Dakota St.  He set an Ohio Valley Conference record with 250 kick return yards on 7 returns for an incredible 35.7 yard
average.  As a freshman last season, Holt set the OVC record for total kick return yards for a season (1,104 yards) and kick
returns (45).
K - Louis Feinstein, FR. K, Rhode Island
Louis Feinstein connected on all 3 of his point after attempts and stayed true on 2 of 3 field goal attempts including a 47-yarder.
Feinstein won CAA rookie of the week honors in helping win head Coach Darren Rizzi’s URI debut. The kicker tallied 9 of the
Ram’s twenty-seven points on the day.
